And realized we need to train much much more in the next few months.
If we have to be stuck somewhere, at least it's a beautiful place to be stuck.
Our last Holiday week in Japan spanned New Years. We ate so many yummy things and saw so many beautiful sites in the Southernmost areas of Japan. We started this trip by catching a train on the very first day of the holiday week. Knowing the trains would be full and busy I prebought our tickets 3 weeks in advance! The start of the Golden Week holiday looked very very different. Golden Week, our 4th Holiday week in Japan and boy did we have big dreams! First it was roadtripping up Australia's Eastern Coast in a campervan!!! Then it was roadtripping and camping around Japan, investigating so many new places. Then the 'strong suggestion' came down from the government. Do not cross prefectural boundaries. Luckily Tochigi is a really beautiful prefecture! Determined to make the most of this 'you can't travel far but it's still a vacation' week we headed out into nature. Found so many new to us parks to explore! And the beautiful treasures hiding among forested trails. We summitted many peaks, each time comparing the elevations with our dreams of summitting Fuji san. And realized we need to train much much more in the next few months. We scrambled up boulders, our fingers and toes finding tiny nooks and crannies for balancing in. Grateful for ladders and ropes in the sketchiest of sketchy portions as we fumble our way back down from the peaks. And always, always taking long breaks at the top to admire these amazing views! If we have to be stuck somewhere, at least it's a beautiful place to be stuck. And finding serene places tucked in the midst of our city and along mountain roads. Icy cold streams for dipping in toes and picnicking alongside. and always admiring ancient temples and gardens, carefully curated even in the midst of a pandemic. It wasn't how we planned to spend our Holiday week. But we found so many new beautiful places, so close to our town that we otherwise would have missed. So much quality time, so many beautiful memories together. And of course dreaming of all the places we want to go when things begin opening back up!

So excited you found the updates!!!! We get 3 holiday weeks a year: one in January, May and August. We're hoping by August we have more travel options than just our prefecture ???
